Timber talks

The moisture dynamics of cross-laminated timber

Tuesday, 4 October 2022 ∙ 10:15 – 11:00 BST ∙ CPD Hub

Lewis Taylor, Senior Timber Frame Consultant, BM TRADA, reviews the research he recently undertook in partnership with Stora Enso. The two-part project looked at both wetting risk during construction and drying rates within completed building assemblies. This talk summarises the recently published research summary on the project, which you can pick up for free during the session, and discusses potential methods for protecting CLT buildings during construction as well as guidance on effective methods of drying if panels do get wet.

What do the changes to Approved Document L mean for timber frame?

Wednesday, 5 October 2022 ∙ 12:00 – 12:45 BST ∙ CPD Hub

Lewis Taylor, Senior Timber Frame Consultant, BM TRADA, discusses the changes in Approved Document L – the further emphasis on continuity of insulation, improved air tightness and the reduction of thermal bridging – and where these changes pose challenges or offer opportunities for timber frame.

Modified woods for construction

Thursday, 6 October 2022 ∙ 11:00 – 11:45 BST ∙ CPD Hub

Dr Andy Pitman, Principal Technical Consultant, BM TRADA, provides a comprehensive overview of modified woods. This talk covers: the range of modified woods currently available on the UK market; the types of modified woods – thermally modified, chemically-modified, and resin-impregnated – and how each is manufactured; the properties that are improved – durability, dimensional stability and aesthetics – and any impacts; and how mechanical properties and interaction with fixings differ for modified woods.
