Our climate is changing. Global warming is one of the greatest challenges facing the planet. The implications are wide reaching and continue to trigger significant changes to the way we use resource.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference is held annually to assess progress in dealing with climate change and establish legally binding obligations for developed nations to work towards reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

These legislative changes specifically cover the production of greenhouse gas emissions. Gases with a higher Global Warming Potential (GWP) absorb more energy, per pound, than gases with a lower GWP, and contribute more to warming Earth.

In response there has been an emergence of regulated or mandatory schemes which relate to the monitoring, reporting and verification of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). What can you do now?

ISO 14064 Greenhouse gases certification

Organizations who wish to monitor, manage and report and reduce their carbon footprint can implement certification to ISO 14064 Greenhouse gases.

ISO 14064 Greenhouse gases is part of the ISO 14000 series of International Standards for environmental management. ISO 14064 provides governments, and organizations with an integrated set of tools for programs aimed at measuring, quantifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The ISO 14064 Standard provides a framework for the verification of GHG inventories and projects, which gives more credibility to the GHG-reduction process. The certification standard enables organizations take part in emissions trading schemes using a globally recognized standard.

ISO 14064 was developed over several years by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO):

ISO 14064-1 Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organizational level- for Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals, provides principles and requirements for quantifying and reporting an organization's carbon footprint

ISO 14064-2 Part 2: Specification with Guidance at the Project Level- for Quantification, Monitoring and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions or Removal Enhancements, provides principles and requirements for quantification, monitoring and reporting activities that create GHG reductions or removals.

ISO 14064-3 Part 3: Specification with Guidance for the Validation and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Assertions- provides principles, requirements, and guidance for individuals conducting or managing verification or validation of organizational carbon inventory reports or project-level assertions.

Verifying greenhouse gases and specifically to ISO 14064 will help meets compliance and legislative targets, increasing customer, stakeholder and investor confidence through enhancing the integrity, credibility and consistency of GHG quantification.

BM TRADA is a UKAS accredited certification body. We offer several certification schemes that will help create a good framework of understanding but through the ISO 14060 family of standards BM TRADA can help provide clarity and consistency for quantifying, monitoring, reporting and validating or verifying greenhouse gas emissions and removals to support sustainable development. Specifically, the use of the ISO 14060 family of standards:

  Enhances the environmental integrity of GHG quantification;

       Enhances the credibility, consistency and transparency of GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting, verification and validation;

       Facilitates the development and implementation of GHG management strategies and plans;

       Facilitates the development and implementation of mitigation actions through emission reductions or removal enhancements;

       Facilitates the ability to track performance and progress in the reduction of GHG emissions and/or increase in GHG removals.

Applications of the ISO 14060 family of standards include:

       Corporate decisions, such as identifying emission reduction opportunities and increasing profitability by reducing energy consumption;

    Carbon risk management, such as the identification and management of risks and opportunities;

       Voluntary initiatives, such as participation in voluntary GHG registries or sustainability reporting initiatives;

       GHG markets, such as the buying and selling of GHG allowances or credits;

       Regulatory / government GHG programmes, such as credit for early action, agreements or national and local reporting initiatives.
