The ResponsibleSteel™ programme (RSS)

The ResponsibleSteel™ programme is a global non-profit organization. It brings together relevant stakeholders at every stage of the steel supply chain who are committed to maximizing the contribution of steel to a sustainable society through responsible production, sourcing and stewardship.

Steel is the world’s most widely used material and those who use it in the construction, transport, automotive, infrastructure, packaging, energy and white goods sectors have a growing expectation that the materials they work with are responsibly sourced and produced.

Steel production has a major environmental, social and economic impact, both positive and negative. And meeting local legal obligations governing the processes involved is not enough to meet the demands of customers, stakeholders and society on a global scale.

The ResponsibleSteel Chain of Custody Standards has been developed and designed to be globally applied, and throughout the steel supply chain to provide reassurance:

  • Ensure sustainability goals regarding the availability of clean water
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Create jobs that benefit individuals and communities
  • Ensure responsible patterns of production and consumption are met
  • Provides reassurances

The ResponsibleSteel standard applies to operational steel making sites and to related sites that process raw materials for steel making, or that produce steel products.

Certification against the ResponsibleSteel standard requires independent third-party auditing by  Accredited Auditors to verify that an organization’s management systems and performance conforms to the relevant Standard.
